Arsenal Double Club featured on BBC Match of the Day!

We were very excited to feature on BBC’s Match of the Day this week! This special feature showed eight lucky pupils from Skinners’ Academy in Hackney, who were invited to the Arsenal Training Ground to attend a press conference with Head Coach, Unai Emery, and ask him some questions in Spanish!

Since our launch back in 2006, our aim has been to give all pupils the confidence and motivation to learn a language, by harnessing their enthusiasm for Arsenal, sparking a curiosity to pursue the subject further in the future.

After the press conference, Emery dropped in to watch the class in action, seeing how the pupils worked with Arsenal branded learning resources and online materials featuring first-team players. The pupils also met interpreter Daniel Lane, who supports Emery in his press conferences, and shared his own language learning experiences with the group.

Project Coordinator, Steve Eadon, said: “How many people can say they have had the Arsenal Head Coach speaking to them when they are learning Spanish?

“It’s something they will remember for the rest of their lives so hopefully that will translate into an enthusiasm for languages and hopefully taking it at GCSE and beyond.

“Languages is not always perceived as the coolest thing to be good at. But the young people look up to professional footballers, many of whom speak multiple languages, and having that purpose and aspiration is the most important thing with learning a language.”

Skinners’ Academy have worked closely with Arsenal Double Club for a number of years now and receive continuous support from the Hackney Learning Trust, who are carrying out pioneering work in the teaching of Spanish across all primary and secondary schools in the borough.
